March 8th, 2016

Nalani Whatley took home her first career victory in the popular Front Wheel Drive class at Import Face-Off on March 6th, 2016 at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, CA. While the majority of FWD class cars sport a huge 72mm turbocharger, Whatley’s CR-X is naturally aspirated and comes up well short in the power department. Despite the difference in power, she made up for it with very consistent passes in the high 9-second range and no break downs. This combination was enough to get the Whatley’s qualified in second place and ultimately, the win.

However, a reliable car hasn’t always been the norm. Since Nalani got back in the driver seat just over a year ago, the Whatley’s have battled numerous transmission issues with their K-powered Honda CR-X. After going out to Bakersfield just a week prior and breaking first gear on the first qualifier, the Whatley’s made fortification of the transmission a priority. Fortunately, her husband and crew chief, John, was able to put together a winning combination and get the car back together just a few days before the race.

“After a five-year hiatus and another year of transmission problems, it feels really good to compete with the turbo guys and have a winning chance. With a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, we’re going to make this happen again.”

With one win under the Whatley’s belt, they hope to continue this success going forward in 2016 as they compete in other drag racing events throughout the season. The next race will be at the IDRC West Coast Nationals on April 10th, back at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, CA

DRC race at Auto Club Dragway

This marks my return to the driver's seat since 2010. It felt amazing to be racing again and I am incredibly hopeful for the future. As planned for this event, I made some shakedown passes in the CRX. Although I lost 2nd gear (while running on a stock trans), I am pleased with the way the car handled and am ready to compete at IFO in Las Vegas on May 3, 2015. I am excited for what the future holds for me and the team, and look forward to representing Torco proudly.
